New Horizons

So i've been doing lots of recording and in the process writing too, some nice ideas are coming out so i'll have a new track or two uploaded a.s.a.p

In the mean time i'm also working with a great new jazz trio featuring Mark Wotherspoon on Drums and Tom Potten on Piano with myself taking up the reigns on Double Bass. Look out for a gig or two in the future.

keep checking back and hope to bring something musical your way soon

RJ

This has made my year so far Robert Johnson

This is the news that since listeners first heard Robert Johnson's masterpieces which went on to become the album known as 'King of the Delta Blues' it's been heard at the wrong speed, John Gibbens has put forward this shocking news and released an essay with his explanantions for his findings, from a guitarist and a sound engineer's point of view it makes alot of sense to me and the recordings he's put up on his website with the altered pitch are amazing and put a whole new spin on the album which has made so many guitarist keep on pushing for that 'sound' and that 'feel'

The CD can be purchased for £4 here

Future Project Credit

Things are moving (sort of)

My studio is almost back up and running, just need my copy of Logic 8 to arrive and i'll be back to my productive self.

Well though it may seem i haven't been up to much on the music front i have, i'm currently writing a single piece that will be centered around the acoustic guitar and involve strings (cello, viola, violin) , piano and all the usual stuff but it's all taking a rather pleasurable shape.

This project is the next faze of my ARichGrinsThorn recordings which call upon some more eastern harmony and a more minimalist sound (if thats possible)

The idea is heavily built around stressing the idea of time in music and how much you can pull and push it without it breaking, it's surprising how far you can take it.

All may take a look of change

The new project is buzzing round me at the moment and I don't know where it's gonna come out of. I have some idea's that i'm starting to put into practice yet it's looking like taking a much bigger layout than first thought, my guitar will have some friends to accompany it, among which is piano again and whatever i an lay my hands on. Drums will almost definatley play a part. just gotta find my sticks wherever i left them

Overplay.co.uk Review - Held Hands

“You’ve gotta know when to hold ‘em, you’ve gotta know when to fold ‘em” said the Father Christmas of Country, Kenny Rogers. And it’s a theory that’s found its way to Essex and Chris Harrington’s debut album. While there’s plenty of atmospheric balladry across the 12 tracks here, there are also plenty of instrumental moments where he holds back and lets his considerable six-string dexterity do the talking. Makes Jose Gonzalez look like a right old chatterbox by comparison.

Much of the album seems to be about moods as much as tunes. From the regal glittering guitars on “Intro”, the glowing guitars of “April Showers” and the icy piano of “Crossed Words” to the cinematic “Break of Light” that works its way round in dark, dramatic circles before suddenly exploding with hope like the end of a hostage situation.

Not that there aren’t some great singer/songwriter sparkles here too. Chris brings a Nick Drake fragility to the achingly atmospheric “Getting Cold”, the sparkling “Seasons” and the mournful “Spent World”, where “no-one cares for change anymore.” It’s not all frowns and sensitivity, though. “Tryin’ To Belong” and “Sea Of Songs” are folky positivity grenades, while “Time Moves In Odd Ways” bristles with countrified joy. A bright moment in a layered, surprising and diverse album. It looks like Chris Harrington has plenty of ideas along with the skill to bring them to life.

A new EP is in the pipeline, the tracks are just coming together. It's looking like a very acoustic affair. Some strange new tunings may be used along with some other new instruments. Its looking like a half and half EP, with half being instrumental and half singing.

New guitar

On friday i was lucky to recieve a lovely parlour guitar by Art Lutherie from one of my students (dave) and it's a pretty damn cool guitar
especially because i can play it on the sofa without noticing it's even there. I may find it hard to leave the sofa from now on.

walking is hard without your legs

I'm finding writing very tricky at the moment as since i moved into my new house i haven't got room for my piano and thats really making writing pieces rather difficult, on a plus i am writing lots of acoustic guitar pieces lately but what i have in mind for my next project needs a piano and many evenings spent at it. frustrating!!!

check out these guys if you get a chance Basquiat Strings featuring Seb Rochford
